House Concerts

What are House Concerts?

Even though House Concerts continue to grow in popularity, there are still many folks who aren’t familiar with the concept. Simply put, a house concert is exactly what the name implies: a live performance by a professional musician in the comfort of your own home. Invite some friends over and everyone can have a relaxed, enjoyable time, with the added bonus of a private concert!

Why a House Concert?

Imagine…no expensive parking, no overworked bartenders, and no noisy crowds! Just a relaxing evening at home with friends with the opportunity to enjoy a professional live music performance.

For the host, it provides a unique event they can share with family and friends. For the musician, it provides an excellent opportunity to earn income by showcasing their talents in a friendly, personal setting. House concerts also offer the benefit of more interaction between the musician and the audience.

How Long is a House Concert?

A typical schedule for a house concert is approximately 2 – 3 hours. It often starts with a 30 minute “meet and greet” between the artist and guests. This is a win/win situation. First, the audience gets to know more about the artist. This allows them to better relate to the songs and stories the artist will be performing. In addition, the artist gets the chance to meet his audience and learn a bit more about them.

The musical performance can be scheduled anywhere from 1- 2 hours. This can be followed by more social time. The guests can ask the artist questions about the original material, or just chat and enjoy the event.

How Does a House Concert Work?

There is no rigid “right way” or “wrong way” to organize a house concert. It often takes place in a small intimate setting. It can be a living room with an audience of only 10-12 or perhaps an outdoor deck with up to 50 guests. Either way, it is an enhanced experience for everyone. The objective is to create something different than a public venue: a place where guests can enjoy a live, interactive performance in a relaxing environment.

A host might decide they would like to have a potluck meal during their house concert, where guests bring a dish to be shared. Alternatively, the host may opt for just light snacks. There are many options! Depending on what distance the artist has traveled, the host may also offer overnight accommodations.

Payment for the artist can be generated by the guests, contributing a suggested donation of $15.00 – $20.00 per person. Alternatively, the host pays the artist directly for a previously agreed amount. Many artists also have CDs, t-shirts or other items which they are able to promote and sell during the event (being a broke musician is not nearly as fun as being a non-broke musician, so every bit helps!).
